Video: Roger Federer Trades Tennis Racket for Violin

Friday, August 23, 2013 - 05:00 PM

On the eve of the US Open, Roger Federer's sponsor Credit Suisse has released a new commercial featuring the tennis great trying his hand at the violin.

The spot has Federer trading in his tennis racquet for a fiddle, though he won't be winning any points for musicality. The commercial is for the 75th anniversary of the Lucerne Festival, which recently got underway (and which WQXR will broadcast).

Of course, classical musicians and tennis players have had a mutual admiration society for some time, with Novak Djokovic enthusing about his love for the art form and pianist Mitsuko Uchida being spotted at Wimbledom in July.

Federer, a 17-time Grand Slam king, begins his quest for a sixth US Open title next week against Grega Zemlja.

Federer has guts and style on the court that took many years to perfect. Now, he has the guts to play his violin in public. Of course, he will perfect his violin skills over the years! Good Luck!

Safe to say Mr. Federer's violin playing created such a racket he ended up on court.

Roger, may I suggest that you stream during your pre-match warm up at the US Open. The Sibelius viloin concerto should get you where you want to be. Good luck.

Apparently Emanuel Ax thinks his playing is OK:

What's the price of a hot-dog at the Open this year, or is there a filet mignon/sashimi concession?
