Quiz: Test Your Knowledge of Black Classical Music History

Saturday, February 01, 2014 - 12:00 AM

The comedian Chris Rock once quipped that Black History Month occurs in February because it's the "shortest, coldest month."

In fact, the historian Carter G. Woodson chose the second week of February, 1926 for "Negro History Week" because of the birthdays of Abraham Lincoln (Feb. 12) and Frederick Douglass (Feb. 14). And while February in New York is indeed short and usually cold, it's filled with a number of celebratory activities.

WQXR will present a number of special programs and features throughout Black History Month. Test your knowledge of black classical music history in the quiz below.

WQXR's Special Black History Month Programming Includes:

Feb. 2 at 7 am & 11 pm: The Choral Mix Spotlights Black Trailblazers

Feb. 5 at 10 pm & Feb. 9 at 11 pm: The Price of Admission: A Musical Biography of Florence Beatrice Price

Feb. 12 at 10 pm & Feb. 16 at 11 pm: I, Too, Sing America: Music in the Life of Langston Hughes

Feb. 19 at 10 pm & Feb. 23 at 11 pm: A Musical Biography of Pioneering Pianist Hazel Scott

Joy doesn't need to be embarrassed and she's not a bigot. The bigot is the person satisfied with black history being "segregated" to just one month, as if that's enough. By the way, I got a perfect score on this quiz and I'm white. There's hope for mankind after all. Come on people, smile on your brother, everybody get together, try to love one another. . ..

Joy, you really should be embarrassed by that comment. (The answer to your really silly question, btw: the other 11 months.)

Interested individuals should refer to a symposium The Black Composer in Classical Music: Talent to be Known: originally posted and described by the Music Library Association: Atlantic Chapter. It includes a conference write-up along with an interesting black composer quiz.

I enjoyed this quiz, but I would like to hear African-American compositions featured throughout the year. AND, I'd live to hear them performed by the NY Philharmonic, The Metropolitan Opera, The American Symphony Orchestra and other organizations.

Hey Joy, Don't you think the whole year is White History Month? You sound like a southern bigot! Just saying. And, I'm as WASP as you can get, descendant of Mayflower Pilgrims.
