Jonny Greenwood's "Doghouse": Live Webcast and Online Chat
U.S. Premiere by Wordless Music Orchestra and Signal live from the NY Society for Ethical Culture
Friday, May 06, 2011
Known best as a multi-instrumentalist, playing electric guitar, keyboards and sampler, and one of the driving artistic voices behind the art-rock band Radiohead, the 39-year old Greenwood is also a classically trained violinist who has become a symbol for an under-40 generation of composers who move between idioms of complex popular music and more classically-oriented Western Music. Also aware of the acute cinematic possibilities of his pieces, Greenwood has adapted Doghouse for the Anh Hung Tran's film Norwegian Wood (based on the Haruki Murakami best-seller), just as his Popcorn Superhet Receiver from 2005 (also premiered by the Wordless Music Series) was transformed for the Oscar-nominated film, There Will Be Blood. The string trio soloists from this performance of Doghouse include Courtney Orlando, violin; John Pickford Richards, viola; and Lauren Radnofsky, cello.
Rounding out the program is another versatile piece, Philip Glass's Symphony No. 4, "Heroes" which riffs on six tracks from the 1977 David Bowie / Brian Eno album, "Heroes," as a basis for a Twyla Tharp Dance Company production and György Ligeti's Chamber Concerto for 13 Instruments, an iridescent piece for six wind, five string and two keyboard players with Ligeti's characteristic mix of complex tempi overlays and dense, dark harmonies.

I agree with Porter Anderson. I usually agree with Porter Anderson. I wonder why that is?
Anyway, yes. What a concert. Radiohead would fit nicely into the GreeneSpace, yes?
With video. Video is becoming ever more important, as witness the three really terrific presentations by ICE. The only thing ICE is missing is a viola and a decent violist.
So, onward into the new paradigm.
have signed up now ..this site ..marvellows..and the concert awesome!! thanks...
Tonight's live performance convinces me that we really need Jonny Greenwood and Radiohead to perform for a live Q2 transmission, preferably video as well as audio (as Q2 did with Meredith Monk earlier this week). "Doghouse" is electrifying, at times taking what only Ligeti could have started, and distilling it into a long, gorgeous nightmare of shimmering, peculiarly summertime wonder. All of us in Q2's live chat room with Nadia Sirota and NPR's Anastasia Tsioulcas were transfixed. THANK you to Q2, Wordless Music, Signal, Brad Lubman for this outstanding experience. Let's get even closer to the source if we can. I'll gladly spend a night in this "Doghouse" every chance I get.
Hard to understand how a poseur like Glass ends up on the same program as a serious composer like Ligeti.
