Meredith Monk Live Videocast
New Sounds Live from the Greene Space: Meredith Monk and Friends
Wednesday, May 18, 2011
On Wednesday, March 18 at 7 pm, Q2 and New Sounds Live team up once again to bring you a live audio and video Webcast from The Greene Space. Meredith Monk and Vocal Ensemble and the Todd Reynolds Quartet perform tracks from Monk's newest album, Songs of Ascension. Join New Sounds’ host John Schaefer for performance and conversation with Monk and featured musicians, including Q2's own Nadia Sirota.
“Why is up more sacred than down?” In Songs of Ascension, composer, vocalist, director/choreographer, and auteur Meredith Monk reflects on the notion that spirituality more often leads upward than downward. Inspired in part by the writings of Paul Celan on the “Song of Ascents” — 15 of the Psalms sung by people ascending during pilgrimages — Monk’s work weaves together voices and instruments; the strings, reeds, percussion, and shruti box (a drone instrument from India) envelop the audience in contemplative, celestial sound. Some playful recurring sections proceed in a circular way, echoing the round form of either the stupa (Buddhism) or mosque.
This show will be archived on this page for on-demand streaming following the performance.

Outstanding experience, having the live video stream for this event from The Greene Space! Congratulations to everyone who made this unique evening possible. Such a resonant way to share a visit back to "Songs of Ascension" and another wrinkle in how Q2 can gather the forces of new-classical, from Nadia Sirota with Todd Reynolds' quartet to Monk, herself, still a remarkably vital founding force).
A better Wednesday evening than most. :-) Thanks!
