This installment of the 2011 SONiC Festival was recorded on October 15 at Columbia University's Miller Theatre. Titled Fractured Jams, the show featured the Chicago-based ensemble Eighth Blackbird performing works by Dan Visconti, Timothy Andres, Bruno Mantovani, Amy Beth Kirsten, Caleb Burhans and Fabien Svensson. In addition to being one of three NYC premieres, Bruno Mantovani’s Chamber Concert No. 2 was an Eighth Blackbird commission.
Eighth Blackbird formed in 1996 and since its inception has received two Grammy awards, is responsible for numerous commissions including Steve Reich’s Double Sextet, holds ensemble-in-residence positions at the University of Richmond and University of Chicago, and is eagerly anticipating its fourth record release on the Cedille label featuring works by Steve Mackey and Rinde Eckert.
