Tonight, Saturday May 7 from 5 to 8pm, Q2 continues Spring Fever with a sonically immersive primer for WQXR's upcoming Spring for Music broadcast of the Toledo Symphony performing works by André Previn and Dmitri Shostakovich live from Carnegie Hall at 8 pm.

Though perhaps best known as a versatile conductor and pianist, Previn has gained increasing notoriety as a composer of award-winning film scores and incidental music, such as the collaboration with playwright Tom Stoppard, Every Good Boy Deserves Favor, which receives its New York-premiere as part of tonight's WQXR broadcast. Nonetheless, there are also compelling forays into traditional classical forms and today we focus on his concertos, including ones for piano, violin and a double concerto for violin and double bass.  

Alternating with Previn's concertos will be lesser known vocal works of Dmitri Shostakovich, a composer already enshrined in the pantheon of composers, but more for his dense, programmatic symphonies and virtuosic concertos than for his vocal works. Q2 thus cedes the stage to a fraction of his prodigious catalogue of works for vocal soloist, including From Jewish Folk Poetry, Seven Romances on Poems of Aleksandr Blok and Suite on Verses of Michelangelo.
