As the academic year comes to an end, conservatory students are unveiling the fruits of their studies in concerts, recitals and operas around New York. Admission to performances by these polished musicians is usually inexpensive, if there is even a charge.

Check out these calendars of events at the top 5 conservatories to find an affordable and enjoyable student performance:

1. Each year The Juilliard School holds about 700 events--mostly free--in and around New York. Each spring, the school floods the Lincoln Center campus with young musicians. Some highlights include Poulenc's opera, Les Dialogues des Carmelites, and a master class with viol impresario Jordi Savall.

2. The New School's music division, Mannes, has several gems embedded in its calendar. Among them is a Yefim Bronfam master class, the annual Contemporary Music Festival, which features three of the conservatory's student ensembles and a fully staged production of Cosi Fan Tutti.

3. Farther up on Broadway, the Manhattan School of Music has planned a number of master classes with artists such as David Krakauer, Glenn Dicterow and Gilbert Kalish. This year's opera is Le Nozze di Figaro. The school's resident ensemble, the American String Quartet makes its way to 65th Street for a concert at Merkin Hall.

4. Students and faculty from Yale's School of Music regularly visit Manhattan for performances at Carnegie Hall and Le Poisson Rouge. But it's worth driving to New Haven for events like Krzysztof Penderecki conducting the Yale Philharmonia through a survey of his most important works.

5. For a variety of vocal music, Westminster Choir College in Princeton, NJ has few equals. The College contains seven formal choral ensembles (not counting smaller student groups) that explore secular and sacred music from the Renaissance forward. In addition, the school is staging Debussy's Pelleas et Melisande.
