The Jacobsens' Top Five Nonmusical Sounds
Tuesday, September 13, 2011
Life in New York City can make one attuned to environmental sounds, both pleasing and irritating. And so it is with Eric and Colin Jacobsen, brothers and co-artistic directors of The Knights, the Brooklyn-based chamber orchestra. Conductor Eric and violinist Colin seem to subscribe to the notion popularized by John Cage that everyday sounds may constitute music -- itself a reflection of the influence of Zen Buddhism. Here are the brothers' Five Favorite Nonmusical Sounds.
1. Tennis Can
2. A Sizzling Grill
3. A Paper Cutter
4. Ice Hitting Ice
5. Silence
