Saturday Morning Cartoons: Madama Butterfly
Saturday, December 17, 2011
This Saturday’s cartoon features the aria “Un bel di,” from Giacomo Puccini’s Madama Butterfly, which just so happens to be Saturday’s Metropolitan Opera broadcast.
This aria appears in a segment from L’Opera Imaginaire, a beautiful 1993 collection of animated shorts based on opera arias. One word of warning for any parents with small children watching, though, this animated piece ends in much the same way as the opera.

The artword in your choice of Saturday cartoon of Mme. Butterfly was very evocative and romantic. I was captured. But then seeing the choices of other U Tube Madamas I selected Maria Callas. There was no need for any image. In fact the falling cherry blossoms were superfluous.. Just the music, far more restrained than with the cartoon, said and imagined it all.
