You know the music of Bernard Herrmann, even if you’re just learning his name. Perhaps the movie Psycho rings a bell? He scored that Hitchcock classic as well as dozens of other influential films, starting with Citizen Kane (1941) and ending with Taxi Driver (1976).

Herrmann gave us the screeching violins in Alfred Hitchcock's Psycho -- which have become one of pop culture’s most identifiable (and widely imitated) film cues -- yet his lush, atmospheric scoring is what continues to capture the hearts of audiences today. His music gave emotional depth to tragic characters, psychotic murderers and space aliens. In commemoration of his 100th birthday, we trace the milestones in his wide-ranging career.
