Listening to the PBS presentation on New Years Eve 2011 - wonderful program. BUT two jazz-based American pieces - West Side Story and Gershwin Rhapsody in Blue. Where did jazz originate? But try as I might I scanned the huge orchestra and could not find one black face. This is New York after all. All-white but with large sprinkling of Chinese or Japanese musicians. All wonderful of course but...something's missing.
As a high school student in 1964 I attended one of the concerts at which Bernstein spoke about a Xenakis piece. It was a most interesting experience for a young person and I was shocked when some of the audience left the hall during the performance.
That an a performance that season by Isaac Stern of the Mozart Violin Concerto #5 are truly memorable moments for me.
