Iran Refuses To Halt Nuclear Program

Wednesday, December 02, 2009

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad says his country will enrich uranium to a higher level, in direct conflict with international calls to halt the nuclear program.

The West fears Iran's enrichment program will produce the material for a nuclear bomb. Iran denies such charges.

In a televised speech in the central city of Isfahan today, Ahmadinejad said, "Under pressure of a few superficially powerful countries ... the International Atomic Energy Agency passed an illegal resolution against the Iranian nation." That's according to a report from Al Jazeera.

The Associated Press reports Ahmadinejad expressed frustration with negotiations over a U.N.-backed deal to swap Iran's low-enriched uranium for higher-enriched fuel rods to power its medical research reactor.

Enriching uranium to levels around 90 percent results in material suitable for a nuclear warhead, something the West feels Iran is striving to do secretly.

Iran insists its nuclear program is for peaceful purposes.
