Afghanistan's former foreign minister Abdullah Abdullah has dropped out of this Saturday's run-off election.

Abdullah said he quit because demands he had sought from the government and the Independent Election Commission, including replacing Afghanistan's top election official with someone more qualified, had not been met, Reuters reports.

“Afghan people deserve a better election,” Abdullah told CNN.

United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon met President Hamid Karzai and Abdullah in Afghanistan Monday.

A U.N. statement said the meetings were "to assure them and the Afghan people of the continuing support of the United Nations towards the development of the country and the humanitarian assistance that the U.N. provides," according to Reuters.
