First Lady Hosts Classical Music Night at White House

Thursday, October 29, 2009

First Lady Michelle Obama will open the White House to classical music next week.

On Wednesday, the First Lady will host the fourth in a series of musical education workshops, giving 120 middle and high school students from across the country a chance to learn from top classical performers. Violinist Joshua Bell and guitarist Sharon Isbin, both Grammy Award winners, will lead afternoon workshops for the students along with cellist Alisa Weilerstein and pianist Awadagin Pratt.

In the evening, the performers will give a concert for the students, President Obama and the first family and guests in the East Room of the White House. At the concert Sujari Britt and Jason Yoder will accompany Ms. Weilerstein in duets.

Previous White House music workshops have focused on jazz, latin and country music. Ms. Obama has been been using the events to advocate for funding after-school and out-of-school arts programs – including those in underprivileged communities.
