A federal judge in Virginia has declared part of the nation's new health care law unconstitutional.

In his ruling, U.S. District Judge Henry E. Hudson sided with Virgnia's Attorney General, Kenneth Cuccinelli, who sued the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services over a provision of the law requiring all Americans to have health insurance or pay a fine, according to The Associated Press. Americans would need to comply with that requirement in 2014.

As The AP reports, Hudson is the first federal judge to rule against the law, despite several challenges: Federal judges in Virginia and Michigan have already decided in favor of the Obama administration, and another suit, filed in a Florida court, is still in progress..
