Alleged Russian Spies Due Back in Court

Thursday, July 01, 2010

Nine of the 11 people arrested for allegedly serving as secret Russian spies will be appearing in federal court again today.

They'll be attending bail hearings in New York, Massachusetts and Virginia.

The alleged money man for the spy ring vanished in Cyprus yesterday, a day after being released on bail.  Authorities say Christopher Metsos failed to show up for a required meeting with police.

The lawyer for accused spy Anna Chapman already argued for bail at her first court appearance in Manhattan on Monday, but the judge ordered her jailed without bail.

The suspects have been charged with failing to register as foreign agents, a crime that is less serious than espionage and carries up to five years in prison. Some also face money laundering charges.
