Looting, Fire and Curfews in Chile

Tuesday, March 02, 2010

Looters set a department store on fire in Concepcion, Chile following Saturday's 8.8-magnitude earthquake. People are continuing to fight over goods and gasoline there, and a curfew is in place until midday to help keep the city calm.

The earthquake's death toll is at more than 700. The homes of more than 500,000 Chileans have been damaged. Search and rescue crews are patrolling the ruins of buildings to find earthquake survivors. Firefighters have found 25 survivors and nine bodies in one 70-unit apartment building in Concepcion.

The Associated Press reports that Chile's President Michelle Bachelet says she's trying to get food, water and other aid to Chile's hardest hit areas but that the country could use outside help. Argentina and Brazil are among the nations sending food and medical supplies. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton says she's taking satellite phones and a technician to Chile, and that the U.S. plans to send additional aid.
