Natalie Dessay has withdrawn from the part of Ophelie in the Met's production of Hamlet.
The Associated Press reports that Dessay will not play the part in the Metropolitan Opera's Ambroise Thomas production because she is ill.
Marlis Petersen will take over the March 16, 20, 24, 27, 30, and April 2 shows. The Met has not yet announced who will play Ophelie in the other April performances. Peterson is a German soprano who made her company debut as Adele in Die Fledermaus in 2005. She recently created the title role in the world premiere of Aribert Reimann’s Medea at the Vienna State Opera.
Hamlet, conducted by Louis Langrée, also stars Simon Keenlyside in the title role, with Jennifer Larmore as Gertrude, Toby Spence as Laërte, and James Morris as Claudius. The production marks the Met debuts of directors Patrice Caurier and Moshe Leiser.
