NY State Police Chief Resigns, Again

Tuesday, March 09, 2010

A week after his boss left the New York State Police, the acting superintendent says he's retiring too.

First Deputy Superintendent Pedro Perez says his departure has nothing to do with the attorney general's investigation into whether troopers and Governor Paterson contacted a woman who had accused one of the governor's aides of domestic violence. Perez is stepping down after 28 years.

The New York Times quotes from a statement issued by Perez:

“My decisions over time, combined with the indication that you are seeking a new superintendent and the labor unions’ perception of my ability to lead the agency, have led me to the conclusion that continuing in my position as acting superintendent may be an obstacle to progress of the New York State Police, an agency I love.”

Police Field Commander John Melville will take over as acting superintendent Friday.
