The doors to many of Italy's opera houses remain shuttered today, as workers continue to strike in protest of potential funding cuts.

The New York Times reports that union representatives are demonstrating against new government regulations that they say would adversely effect the salaries and benefits of employees. The country's 14 largest opera houses receive much of their funding from the Italian government.

Opera houses began canceling performances on Friday after Italian President Giorgio Napolitano signed the decree, according to the Times. It's unclear at this point how the strikes will effect upcoming performances at opera houses throughout the country.
