Oil Platform Explodes in the Gulf of Mexico

The U.S. Coast Guard rescued 13 people following an oil rig explosion in the Gulf of Mexico on Thursday morning. The oil platform is about 100 miles off the coast of Louisiana.
Firefighters extinguished the blaze on the platform late on Thursday. As The Associated Press reports, the Coast Guard now says there is no evidence of an oil sheen spreading from the site, even though there had been reports of an oil sheen on the surface earlier on Thursday.
The platform is owned by Mariner Energy, a company based in Houston, Texas. The AP reports that the platform was used to produce oil and gas, although it's unclear how much was being produced at the time of the explosion.
