Earlier today on WQXR, we brought you a set of variations by Johann Nepomuk Hummel on this familiar tune.
In German, it goes like this:

Morning Host Jeff Spurgeon can’t recall the English words he sang to that tune when he was growing up. He’d appreciate some help, and so would the rest of the staff, because now that he’s raised the question, we can’t get the melody out of our heads.
What English lyrics go with this tune?
Jeff Spurgeon has been the guiding voice for a broadcast journalism class in a high school in Queens and several New York City choirs, hosting numerous concerts around the world and working as a radio host and newscaster for over 30 years.
