Dogs enjoy many of the things that we enjoy: table food, water, beer and surprises. But what about music? Some seem to, but perhaps their pleasure is derived from the enjoyment they sense from their owners as they listen.
According to an article in Australia's Daily Telegraph, some folks in Sydney have put together a concert just for dogs at the Sydney Opera House. However, it appears a few more composers and compositions are needed. They already have Woofgang Amadeus and Sebastian Bark. I'm adding composer Emily Howell to the list and I think a Treemonisha would be of use as well. What will you add to the mix?

Why have cats been left out of this topic? My cats do like music, especially high female voices, as in R. Strauss arias, duets, or trios, for example.
As the happy parents of 14 pounds of dogs (one poodle and one maltese), I can tell you that they care considerably more about food than they do Faure.
Dogs are much too good and we humans do not deserve them. We deserve cats who are selfish but who reward us with their beauty and grace. I must say however that my cat would love it when I would sing to her. Yes, I am one of those cat people.
I play a fair amount of chamber music at home so my dogs quite good conert manners. As howling is not allowed, if they don't like something they are free to leave. I had two Norfolk terrier (mother and daughter) who hated Bartok and walked out of the room whenever it was played.

Greetings Mr. McKnight! Just wanted to say thank you for taking the time to speak with our students today. Class 702 says hello and they enjoyed your presentation.
A Poochini aria will guarantee a howling success! Also, "Amazing Grace" played by bagpipe guarantees lots of audience involvement.
My beagle has absolutely no interest in music. I think it's because he has such great difficulty at the keyboard (very small fingers)....and those nails!
However, he does seem to pick up his ears when I'm going through my vocal excersizes. Hmmm, that may not be a good thing.
All "arf"..ertures were written for dogs.
Let us not forget Hugo WOLF, composer of some of the most beautiful lieder and WOLF-Ferrari, composer of the opera "Jewels of the Madonna" Carl ORFF, composer of "Carmina Burana" and Stephen Foster's "OId DOG tray."
Terrence,
Love the variety of programs you treat us to each evening. Always interesting, always precious.
Also I can't tell you how much I appreciate how well WNYC handled the transition with WQXR over the last few months.
(A lot of folks appreciated it, as you can see with the fund drive !)
Truly heroic, and truly a blessing, this station is such a pleasure, such a Rennaisance for the medium.
Thanks.
Anette Hassell from North Bergen might be familiar with the music compsed by Carl Arf.
Music for dogs composed by: Scottie Joplin, Peter Ilyich Chowkovsky and Woffgang Amedeus Mozart.
Peter Shickele performed, "Wachtet Arf" at his PDQ concerts.
Hmm, Ruff-maninhoff?
just heard this mentioned when my alarm went off. first thought upon waking: obviously - fur elise!!
What about cats? My late cat loved Brahms, especially the Intermezzo in A, Op. 118 #2.
As for composers, there's Cat-chaturian.
Gershwin sure got it right with 'Walking the Dog'. But what about Poochini? 'La Bow - M', perhaps?
mw
Yeah and Mozart's K.9
