Don’t Miss: Life is a Dream, July 24, 28; August 6, 12, 19

America’s leading summer opera festival can usually be counted on for standard-repertory operas like Madame Butterfly, The Tales of Hoffmann and The Magic Flute, each of which will be heard this summer. But the big news surrounds Lewis Spratlan’s Life is a Dream, a work with a famously protracted genesis. Written in the mid 1970s, it brought the composer the Pulitzer Prize in Music in 2000 after receiving a partial performance at Amherst College. But cost and logistics prevented a first full production -- until this summer. Leonard Slatkin conducts five performances starting July 24.
