WQXR’s Classical Moonlighters Competition Submission Rules
CAN I ENTER?
All genres of classical music are welcome, but you must fit into one of the following categories:
o Chamber Ensembles (up to nine players)
Due to technical and space limitations, we are unable to support dancers or orchestras at this time.
All performers under the age of 18 must submit a permission form signed by a parent or legal guardian. No performers under the age of 13 are eligible to submit for audition. Applicants should be those who play an instrument or sing for pleasure and dedication to classical music and its repertoire. They may not perform, teach, or compose classical music as their primary means of income. All decisions of eligibility by WQXR are final. Artists who are professionally represented (under management) are not eligible to compete, nor are employees of NYPR, their immediate family members, or anyone living in their same household. Soloists must live in NY, NJ, or CT at the time of submission. For ensembles, at least one member must live in NY, NJ, or CT at the time of submission, and this member must directly submit on behalf of the ensemble.
HOW DO I SUBMIT?
You must submit your entry online via this video upload form. Your submission must include a video of you/your group’s performance lasting no longer than 5 minutes. If selected to advance to the next round, your video will be made public for online voting in the semi-finals. Online submissions will be accepted from Tuesday, Nov. 17, 2015 until Monday, Feb. 15, 2016 at 11:59 pm ET. Incomplete entries will not be considered.
HOW DO I WIN?
On Monday, March 14, 2016, at 12 pm ET WQXR will announce on wqxr.org 10 semi-finalists per category in the following age categories: 13-18, 19-34, and 35+.
The semi-finals will take place online: voting for finalists will be open to the public in mid-March 2016. The voting period and end date will be specified in the March 14, 2016 announcement.
Online votes for artists/groups will inform the selection of the top 3 artists/groups per age category for the final competition, which will take place in The Greene Space on May 6, 2016. Selected finalists must be available to perform live at The Greene Space at 7 pm on Friday, May 6, 2016, and must be available to soundcheck that afternoon, any time after 2pm. Selected finalists will be notified by email following the announcement. If a selected artist or group does not confirm availability and participation for the finals and the winners’ concert within seven days of notification, a replacement artist will be chosen. Entrants in the 13-18 age category who are selected as finalists may be asked to provide releases from their parent/guardian.
At the finals in The Greene Space, a panel of judges will determine a winning artist/group from each age category.
WQXR and the panel of judges retain ultimate discretion in choosing winners. Entrants agree that WQXR has the sole right to decide all matters and disputes arising from this contest and that all decisions of WQXR (including with respect to winners of each stage) are final and binding.
HOW ARE FINALISTS SELECTED?
A team of WQXR staff, and, for the finals, a panel of judges, will view and adjudicate all submissions. Artists will be selected based on the following criteria:
o Technical Excellence (a high level of proficiency and skill)
o Artistry (a uniquely individual approach and style to the work)
o Performance Quality (providing a polished product that has an impact on the listener).
WHAT ARE THE GUIDELINES FOR SUBMISSION?
o All video submissions must not exceed 5 minutes in length.
o If chosen to perform in the finals, the performance at the finals should not exceed five minutes in length.
o You must be willing to bring all necessary instruments with the exception of the piano, mics, and PA system provided by The Greene Space.
o Any group submissions with age ranges across categories must enter in the age category of the oldest group member.
WHEN IS THE DEADLINE?
All online entries must be received by 11:59 pm ET on Friday, Feb. 15, 2016. Any submissions received after that time will not be considered.
