Naomi Lewin, how could you—how DARED you—in the very week that Van Cliburn DIED, play that piece of garbage performance of the Paganini Rhapsody when his 1970 recording with the Philadelphia Orchestra remains a landmark of recorded music beauty? Your choice from 1990—a rushed, empty reading seemingly driven by envy or even dislike of Rachmaninoff—was so badly recorded, to boot, it didn’t even sound like a full orchestra playing behind Feltsman. To hear this dreck on the radio today was to hear the memory of an American artist insulted. For shame.
