Yes, it is "Wagner Week", and, yes, WQXR is spending a lot of time on what appear to be efforts to educate the wished-for new listeners who know little or nothing about what we call "classical" music, so those of us who know more about the music played here sometimes have to put up with the type of stuff like Jeff Spurgeon dragged us through this morning (about what was billed as
"Wotan's Farewell and Magic Fire Music" from "die Walkure"). What was not pointed out, however, and what the neophyte would not know, was that in a real performance of the opera Wotan would be singing his final words, which here were (as is often the case when this is played on this station) limply mimicked by a trombone. Though Wagner would not use the term, we should remember that this is opera, doc.
