A country girl from New Hampshire, the first time I heard Le Sacre du Printemps was in class and then the listening studio in a music building that no longer exists at Middlebury College where I was also introduced by my New Jersey room-mate to WQXR when it reached us by AM radio after 5 p.m. nightly. I am picturing myself listening with headphones as I looked out the windows at the Adirondocks from that attic sized third floor listening room. I remember a long table the length of the room, with headphones at each seat and of course turntables for 78 recordings. It was all so I can enjoy it with you this evening. The other memorable hearing of the work was live at St. Thomas Church in NYC at the Stravinsky 75th anniversary celebration. I am trying to remember whether he was there in person, or whether we were celebrating his career.Google will know.
