We kick off our first episode with some music from the New World – in celebration of Columbus Day Weekend!
Back in 1892, most Americans were writing music that pretty much sounded like European composers. But while teaching at the National Conservatory of Music, an integrated school in New York, Dvorak wrote the American Quartet with Negro spirituals in mind. He had been introduced to spirituals by a conservatory student, composer Harry Burleigh, the grandson of a slave. Charles Ives was one of the first Americans who implemented Dvorak’s ideas into his symphonic music with his Symphony # 2. Terrance weaves a narrative that tracks the development of the American Classical musical dialect.
