Every so often on The Choral Mix we want to hear the great choral masterworks from start to finish. Today on the show, you’ll hear Fauré’s Requiem a work that transports us into a state of peace, calm and assurance. We pair that with short works of the contemporary composer, Arvo Pärt. His pieces are sublime much like Fauré’s in that they have the power to transfix and transport us.
We hear two favorite movements from Pärt’s hauntingly beautiful Berliner Mass - the Kyrie and Veni Sancte Spiritus with Tonu Kaljuste leading the Estonian Chamber Choir. Listen for the influences of Gregorian chant and medieval music. Rounding out the show is Pärt’s Beatitudes with the Choir of St Ignatius Loyola and Nancianne Parrella at the organ.

Such a gorgeous piece! I love Faure's music.
These are two of my favourite composers, and hearing them one one programme nearly moved me to tears. Nearly.
Thank you for bringing us this music, this gift.
Faure's music brings tears of joy and sadness out of me - I stop whatever I'm doing in order to hear every bit of it. And Arvo Part - what a genius. I think this was one of your best programmes, ever - as far as I'm concerned. And I'll listen again after this Mendelsohn piece - another masterpiece.
Thank you very much.

I listened to this program and it was great. Thanks again, Kent, for the diversity of choral music programming that you curate for us.
Thank you, Kent Tritle. Love your choral programs and listen to them every Sunday night. A real blessing for New Yorkers.
Thank you. Living far from a great radio station, being able to listen to WQXR on line is so important and appreciated. Special thanks for this beautiful program.
