In this 1973 Composers' Forum with host Martin Bookspan, Lukas Foss chats about the many musical hats he wears and musical life in both Israel and America. He discusses finding inspiration in sources as mundane as street signs.
The composer also explores his recent concerns with the need to destroy his personal musical past, namely the giant, influential legacy of Johann Sebastian Bach. While not attacking Bach directly, he quotes the revered composer's music with the intention of "obliterating" it by external forces. Foss also clarifies the use of technology in the construction of pieces that are meant to be performed by live performers.Â
