This week From the Top broadcasts from Louisiana State University’s Shaver Theatre in Baton Rouge, featuring local cellist Jean Kim, a 15-year-old with some serious musical talent. Jean studies cello with Minhye Clara Kim and attends the Juilliard Pre-College Division in New York City. On the show Jean performs Capriccio by Lukas Foss, accompanied by Christopher O’Riley, piano.
Also on the broadcast: 16-year-old pianist Jennifer Tu from New Orleans, Louisiana performing L’Isle Joyeuse by Claude Debussy; 17-year-old violist Marcus Rose from Shreveport, Louisiana, performing the first movement Rapsodie from Suite Hebraique by Ernest Bloch, accompanied by Christopher O’Riley; 17-year-old soprano Jennifer Seidel from Baton Rouge, Louisiana, performing “Les Filles de Cadix” by Léo Delibes, accompanied by Christopher O’Riley; and The Red Hot Brass Band from New Orleans, comprised of 17-year-old Doyle “Red” Cooper, trumpet, 17-year-old Gregory Morrow, tenor saxophone, 18-year-old Colin Frishberg, trombone, 20-year-old José Besselman, bass drum, 17-year-old Peter Varnado, snare drum, and Paul Robertson, tuba, performing the traditional “Just a Closer Walk with Thee.”
