In the second of four broadcasts from the Lucerne Festival in Switzerland, Daniel Harding leads the Mahler Chamber Orchestra in a program of reflective works by Schubert and Schumann. Jeff Spurgeon hosts the broadcast, which starts at 8 pm.

The program is bookended with Schubert's setting of Goethe’s poem "Song of the Spirits" and his Mass in E-flat, two works that address themes of humanity's precarious existence, how we relate to the higher powers and eternity. Both reflect his own complex relationship to his Catholic faith. In between is Schumann's hushed Nachtlied.
