On Saturday, Sept. 22 at 1 pm, three days after opening the New York Philharmonic's new season, pianist Leif Ove Andsnes made his only New York solo appearance this season in The Greene Space. WQXR.org webcast the sold-out event live.
Andsnes performed Beethoven's Sonatas No. 21, Op. 53 (“Waldstein”) and No. 22, Op. 54, and spoke with host Jeff Spurgeon about his deep dive into the composer's music. The Norwegian pianist has just released the first installment of a new Beethoven piano concerto cycle with the Mahler Chamber Orchestra, which he also conducts.

The Knights Perform Mozart, Boccherini and a Glass Premiere in Central Park

This is profound and fresh Beethoven playing from an artist at the peak of his powers. Thank you WQXR for bringing this to us. And Jeff's intro was pretty stellar too.
I first met Leif Ove Andsnes as part of the Gilmore International Keyboard Festival in Kalamazoo, Michigan, and have ever since been struck by the power of his teaching and piano interpretations. I do hope you may archive this in delayed streaming for the same reasons I so appreciated it when you did so with Philip Glass' and others' explanations of "Einstein on the Beach," webcast in The Greene Space as well. These valuable educational resources for which my students and I Thank You are simply Incredible.
Well, that's us ... just a bunch of chinless Norwegians. We're all great lovers, though.
