In this week's broadcast from the Los Angeles Philharmonic, veteran Dutch conductor Edo de Waart leads the orchestra in a program that spans Chinese philosophy, Germanic story-telling and a popular Beethoven concerto.

Qigang Chen's The Five Elements, a 10-minute tone poem inspired by traditional Chinese beliefs about the building blocks of the universe, opens the evening. From there, Joyce Yang, silver medalist of the 12th Van Cliburn International Competition, is the soloist in Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 3. Things end on a suitably grand note, with Strauss' tone poem, Ein Heldenleben (A Hero's Life).
