When President Obama began considering whom he should appoint to the Supreme Court, Diane Wood was the first person he interviewed. She was on everyone’s short list. He ultimately picked someone else but as a Judge on the United States Court of Appeals, Wood remains a formidable force in shaping the law. She also happens to be an accomplished oboist playing in several amateur orchestras.
In conversation with host Gilbert Kaplan, Judge Woods reveals:
- Her favorite oboe concerto
- Her reaction to learning a conductor described her playing as “sober and practical”
- Another instrument she would love to play
- What music she has on when writing opinions
- The music she chose for her wedding
- Which historic composer would be her choice to create an opera about controversial Supreme Court battle Bush v. Gore

Another excellent edition of the show,Judge Wood discussed how she reared three of her children to appreciate serious music and understand the component parts of music, Particularly vital was the way she discussed learning the oboe late in her life after the piano and the clarinet and becoming a member of an orchestra largely made up of lawyers. Good behind the scenes material..Great work.....Sincerely William Price
Mr. Kaplan...an excellent show last night w/
Judge Wood.
I found her BIO on the FedSite; I am a teacher at Westfield HS, the town where
the Judge said she resided before moving
to TX. I'm curious if the Judge attended our
HS for the two years prior to her family move to Houston.
Is there a non-impertient way to know this?
Thank you for your low-key approach with
your guests...
