Massenet's Manon
This week's live broadcast starts at 12 noon
Saturday, April 07, 2012
Russian soprano Anna Netrebko sings the title role of Manon for the first time in her career in this new production by Laurent Pelly. Composed in 1884, Manon is perhaps the most popular of Romantic French operas.
Based on Abbe Antoine-Francois Prevost's L'Histoire du Chevalier des Grieux et de Manon Lescaut, Manon tells the story of a young lady who is headed for a convent until she meets a handsome chevalier. They run off together and she is drawn to a life of wealth. But it doesn't end there.
This production also features Polish tenor Piotr Beczala (as des Grieux), Brazilian baritone Paulo Szot (as Manon's cousin, Lescaut) and American bass-baritone David Pittsinger (as the Count des Grieux, the tenor's father). Fabio Luisi, the Met's principal conductor, leads from the pit.

I also saw it in a movie theater and loved it. I thought the singers were both marvelous and the acting also excellent. The tenor, Piotr Beczala, I thought was perfect. His singing was sensitive and beautifully done. Loved the production and the conducting. Cannot complain really about anything.
BRAVO, BRAVO, BRAVO..... You complaining people need your ears cleaned. There was nothing "Flat" about today's performance..least of all Anna Netrebko! A wonderful penultimate performance to a delightful Met HDTV Season. Thank you for Long Distance Met Opera!
Technical note..for those of us out in HDTV-landia, seems that often microphones were misplaced, and volume was varied and was occasionally distorted. Certainly not a cast fault.
WOW Two weeks in a row.....And next week...Natalie!!
I saw this Manon in a movie theater today. I found it rather flat. There was some good singing, but the scenery was very poorly done and detracted from the opera. The production, itself did not work well. The dance scene was just bad. Anna Betrebko sang her big arias well but seemed flat at some points. She had some obvious problems in her upper range. Piotr Beczala sang well, but not at the level of the great tenors. The Lyric Opera of Chicago production of 2008/2009 with Natalie Dissay and Jonas Kaufmann was far superior on all points.
Puccini's Manon Lescaut ends in Louisianna. That's OK. Both operas are wonderful.
Wait a minute, what's going on? What about the last act in Louisiana??? :-)
Had not heard this lovely opera for such a long time. Did not pay much attention to Netrebko, mainly the music. Too busy. Welcome change of pace for me as I usually like operas with a lot of murder, mayhem and mischief.
I don't get it. All this praise of Netrebko. She often doesn't land on the note, there are pitch problems everywhere. Oh, I know, she is beautiful. Big deal! This is about the music. Piotr Beczala on the other hand, I haven't heard this role sung this well in like, umm my lifetime.
Brava Anna!
In the two lovers, Manon and Des Grieux, the Met has struck gold.
What man could resist the seductiveness of Anna Netrebco's beauty, gorgeous vocal timbre, musicianship and complete immersion in the dramaturgical representation of her persona, Manon. Maestro Pablo Luisi nuances the orchestra and keeps the melos moving so that the production has verve and a sednse of spontaneity.
I am an opera composer, "Shakespeare" and "The Political Shakespeare," a Wagnerian heldentenor and the director of the Richard Wagner Music Drama Institute. At my website, www.WagnerOpera.com, one may download at "Recorded Selections," free, 37 complete selections from the over one hundred that I have sung in four three hour long solo concerts in the main hall, the Isaac Stern Auditorium, of Carnegie Hall. They are all LIVE performances.
Dear MET, o.k. Netrebko!! The "Tenor" King however = Piotr Beczala!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Greetings from Hamburg, Rainer and " Schöne Ostern!!!!
CBC Buonna Pasqua a tutti e tutti tua Familia. I've been creating havoc on you tube. It's a real kick hearing people comment that a certain chubby tenor was the greatest & LOUDEST Canio ever !!! Enjoy this joyous season & be ready for Siegfried. Take care & don't cook too much. All my best.
I saw this last week. Dreadfully flat production but beautiful singing. Despite the failures of the Gelb regime (and don't get me started on the Ring), making Netrebko their star singer is one of the wiser things the company done.
CBC, this opera is lovely and elegant. Sorry it is not one of your favorites.Hope the singers do it justice.
Buona Pasqua
