Jeff Spurgeon has worked in radio for more than 30 years, beginning as a teenager in his hometown in western Nebraska. He has been an announcer, news reporter, newscaster, interviewer, and producer. His career in New York radio began in 1989, when he joined Mix 105’s morning team. Spurgeon joined WQXR in 1997, and in 2006 he became the station’s morning host. Over the years, Spurgeon has hosted broadcasts from Carnegie Hall, Trinity Church, the Caramoor Festival, and Tanglewood Music Center, as well as from the Czech Republic; Lucerne, Switzerland; and Salzburg and Vienna, Austria. He also hosts monthly conversations with members of the New York Philharmonic and guest artists.
One of Spurgeon’s proudest accomplishments has been his work as a teacher: he developed and taught a course in broadcast journalism for Townsend Harris High School in Flushing, Queens. Spurgeon is also a singer. He has performed with several New York City choruses and church choirs, and he is a member of an a cappella quartet whose repertoire ranges from Renaissance masters to original arrangements in modern styles.
Spurgeon lives in Brooklyn with his wife, Judy, a high school English teacher.
