A Novel Idea

Many movies have been based on novels and the rich, detailed story-telling possible in literature can sometimes translate into an effective film. Sometimes not. But whether or not novels have inspired great movies, those films have clearly inspired great music that reflects the spirit of the books.

Host David Garland presents music composed for movies based on novels, both great and popular novels--and sometimes both--including: Max Steiner, The Fountainhead (Ayn Rand), Michael Gibbs, Housekeeping (Marilynne Robinson), Bronislau Kaper, The Brothers Karamazov (Fyodor Dostoevsky), Jerome Moross, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn (Mark Twain), Howard Shore with Ornette Coleman, The Naked Lunch (William Burroughs), Mychael Danna, The Ice Storm (Rick Moody), Miklos Rozsa, Double Indemnity (James M. Cain), and others.
