Film scores provide a huge range of styles and sounds. From symphonic to electronic, from intimate to gigantic, it all depends on what story a movie wants to tell, and how it wants to tell it. On this week's Movies on the Radio, host David Garland presents music from some contemporary films now in theaters, making it clear that it's now a vital time for film music, with lots imagination and innovation on display. We hear from The Social Network, Let Me In, Howl, and other films.

David, Thank you so much for your follow up. I got it more than a week after you posted it, for I've been so busy with my thesis project. Although I've been listening to the program faithfully : ) almost every week, often I miss some part of the program, juggling with my work or chores. I have not yet had a chance to go to the movie, The Social Network. Very interesting that it uses an arrangement of Peer Gynt, which reminded me of some rock version of classsical masterpieces in the '70s (performed with synthesizers ... was that Yes? can't remember the band name.) Until I finish the project by the end of semester, no time to go to movie theaters, but will be listeing to your program. Altough I wanted but could not post a comment timely, I enjoyed Howard Shore progarm immensely. Thank you.
James,
You can always listen to episodes of Movies on the Radio on-demand on our website.
why do you play music for people who love
movie music on a saturday night when people who
loves movies are at the movies and can't listen
to you movie musical program?
Guido, thanks for your recommendation; you've made me curious!
Yuko, I invited listeners to suggest current films with interesting scores. The Wall Street Journal article I mentioned is "Scoring 'The Social Network,'" by Jim Fusilli. Let's see if I can supply a link here in the comments: http://topics.wsj.com/article/SB20001424052748704657304575539831030302028.html

What was the survey question again?
Also, would you tell us the title of the WSJ article you mentioned in the program?
I'm sorry, I missed part of what you said during the program tonight.
For David Garland...
I recommend Clint Eastwood's score of "Hereafter" which closed the NY Film Festival...
Looking forward to having dinner with this score which at least will be nominated for Best Score if not win the Oscar outright,,,
