The talented, innovative soundtrack composer Jerry Goldsmith died on July 21, 2004. On this anniversary of his death we celebrate his abundant creativity and resourcefulness by hearing some of the scores he wrote for television. TV shows almost never have movie-sized music budgets, so composers have to make the most of small ensembles, and Goldsmith worked with that limitation quite elegantly again and again.
David Garland presents highlights of Goldsmith's music for TV series and TV movies such as "The Twilight Zone," "Dr. Kildare," "Cain's Hundred," "The Homecoming" ("The Waltons"), "The Man from U.N.C.L.E.," "Playhouse 90," "Room 222," "The Going Up of David Lev," "A Girl Named Sooner" and more.

Mr.Goldsmith also wrote scores for the Boris Karloff hosted "Thriller" series.
My favorite of these was an episode entitled "Pigeons from Hell", a chilling score for
acoustic string quartet,no effects, no reverb just strings. I have the whole series.

Thanks for your comments. Does anyone have a favorite Goldsmith TV score that I overlooked? I know he did some Westerns early on, but other than the theme for "Black Saddle," I haven't found that any of that material has been commercially released. I ran out of time for "A Girl Named Sooner," which is a lovely score, so check that out if you can (on the Film Score Monthly label).

You know you are a Goldsmithian when you just join in, hear a few bars and say to yourself that sounds like his "Dust" from Twilight Zone...and you're right. Thank you, WQXR, for reminding us how much was lost this day 8 years ago but how much there still is to celebrate.
David, thank you for a wonderful show for an irreplaceable man:Eight years already. He was such a gift to us. He is missed so much by me. Film music has changed so since the "departures" of Jerry Goldsmith and Elmer Bernstein. Thank you so much!!
You do such wonderful shows.
