A Conversation with Alexandre Desplat

Alexandre Desplat is having an eventful year. He has been composing for an intriguingly wide range of films, from the poignant whimsey of Wes Anderson's "Moonrise Kingdom" to the high-tension drama of Ben Affleck's "Argo," and from the intimate French film "Rust and Bone" to DreamWorks' new animated spectacular "Rise of the Guardians."
Desplat joins David Garland to present his music, to talk about his early years, his fascination with orchestral color, his love of story-telling, and the particulars of these and other projects from this year.

Along with Michael Giacchino, Alexandre Desplat is one of my favorite current film composers Dave and Alexandre got it dead right when they agree that the composer is noted for providing the unexpected choice. Instead of merely accompanying the action of the film he's scoring, Desplat adds a surprising added dimension. His music is more than a compliment but rather a vital, essential componant of the movies with which he'as involved.
I strongly suggest you watch Desplat's comments in the DVD "Conversations on Alex North's 'Spartacus'" accompanying the Varèse Saraband boxed set. Of all the commentators, his is the most honest, considered, intelligent and insightful! The others (Isham, Newman, Schifrin, Tyler, Williams, Young) are good but a little too "Hollywoodish"…
