During WQXR's Lunar New Year celebration, David Garland offers film music that brings East and West together, blending Chinese and western instruments and traditions in colorful, exciting ways.
Included are highlights from Qigang Chen's score for "The Flowers Of War," Zhao Jiping's Peking Opera-inspired music for "Raise the Red Lantern," plus stirring music from a peculiar Hollywood artifact: the 1944 film "Dragon Seed," which starred a non-Asian cast --including Katherine Hepburn -- in Asian roles. The music is by Herbert Stothart, and his score was recorded in stereo, making an unusually vivid experience of film music from that era.

It is also the Tibetan New Year, it would be lovely if you could play some music from the rich musical heritage of
Tibet. Scorsese's film Kundun of course is one film that portrays the religious and spiritual leader the Dalai Lama and his people. I'm not sure if there is classical Tibetan singing but am sure there is chanting.
