Bounteous Birthday Bashes
A Celebratory Week of Sagittarian Composers
Tuesday, December 06, 2011
So I haven't exactly been shy about my love of the holidays. This is probably due, in no small part, to the fact that my birthday is around this time of year. Festively motivated, for the show this week I thought it'd be great to explore others who were born in the first week-or-so of December, and boy howdy! Turns out, this is a great week to be born a composer! Osvaldo Golijov, Jean Sibelius, Henryk Gorecki, Olivier Messiaen, Elliott Carter (who'll be 103 on Sunday!), and even Tom Waits were all born between the 5th and the 11th of December.
This will be a celebratory week of music by Sagittarian composers. We'll listen to some big, fun works (any excuse for Messiaen's Turangalila!) small, intricate works (Gorecki's quartets!) and works that may foil your expectations (you are so excited for early Carter orchestral writing).
Tune in all week for festive music by fire signs. Any composers I left out? If your favorite composer is getting older this week, let me know in the comments and we'll celebrate!
