On May 5, the New York Philharmonic performed its 15,000th concert, a milestone unmatched by any other symphony orchestra in the world. This week’s broadcast captures that program, including the fifth installment of the orchestra’s three-week festival, "The Russian Stravinsky."
Conductor Valery Gergiev leads performances of Stravinsky’s Symphony in C, an alternately brash and pastoral work, his Capriccio for Piano and Orchestra, a quasi-concerto with soloist Denis Matsuev and Petrushka, the ballet music whose score was composed in 1911. The composer’s presence is fitting: he made his American debut as a performer, 85 years ago, conducting the Philharmonic.
Program details:
Stravinsky: Symphony in C
Stravinsky: Capriccio for Piano and Orchestra
Stravinsky: Petrushka (1911 original version)
Valery Gergiev, conductor
Denis Matsuev, piano

Alec Baldwin's voice and delivery adds another dimmension to the total package of WQXR's delivery. Not since Dick Cavvet have I heard such wonderful passion and knowledge in an on air voice. He delivers in such a way that the listener is brought right into the middle of the performance.
Great going. Keep him on the job!

I love WQXR, but have been very disappointed in your evening programming since you went public. We always listened to QXR during dinner, and most of the time loved the music. If we didn't we switched to WNYC. Now we have no choice. Starting about 7:30 or 8, the music is much more modern, dissonanent, or atonal. Not at all conducive to dining much less digesting! If you polled your listeners, I'll bet a lot tune out during those hours. I'll be happy to make a donation if and when I can listen to WQXR during dinner.
And since you want honest comments (and I've had a few glasses of wine) here's another one. I was so glad you went public and I didn't have to hear the obnoxious commercials such as the Legal Seafoods commercial. Now I have to hear a similar obnoxious voices pretending to be Mozart and Verdi. Give us a break!! Whoever decided to run those "commercials" hasn't a clue as to the tastes of QXR listeners.
AWSOME!!
