Since the clarinet made its debut in the early 18th century, composers and musicians from Mozart to Evan Ziporyn have given special attention to it, showing off the instrument's soulful and evocative voice. Woody Allen is even willing to turn down an invitation to the Oscars if he has a gig playing his clarinet.
This week on Q2 with Terrance McKnight, Terrance takes us through the life of the clarinet and the people who have helped make it a pioneering and cross-cultural instrument. From Balkan folk music, klezmer and jazz to Brahms, Corigliano and beyond, heart-wrenching melodies have been written for the clarinet. Tune in for Terrance's favorite clarinet picks.

Ivo Pogorelić is Croatian, not Italian. The name is pronounced pah-GAH-re-lich.
The vowel in field is a long E, not a short I as in your rendition.
Sillitoe is pronounced SILL-uh-toh.
hi! the Martin Luther King, Jr program was so rewarding to listen to. thank you! listening to the CLARINET program, also. and still and will it be forever i miss = time for women composers and musicians. i just don't get it why women are not ALWAYS, consistently 1/2 of all programs.

Terrance McKnight ...Superb my brother!
I had your show on all night tonight and found it so fresh and crisp in the approach to introductions of tunes and I enjoyed your personal touch with the story about visiting your grandfather's grave site.
Everything tied in and blended so well throughout the evening seemlessly.
I felt I was listening to radio in Europe or Asia or some other foreign land....very hip.
Please keep it going!
