In 1711, Handel made his mark in London with the premiere of Rinaldo, the first Italian opera composed specifically for the London stage. It would be the most popular of the composer's operas during his lifetime. Three centuries later, Lyric Opera of Chicago's new production stars countertenor David Daniels, Elza van den Heever, Julia Kleiter, Luca Pisaroni and Sonia Prina.
General Goffredo and his chief knight Rinaldo are fighting King Argante for Jerusalem during the First Crusade. King Argante has enlisted the help of the sorceress Armida, the Queen of Damascus, in vanquishing Rinaldo. The battle quickly becomes more complicated as Armida's tricks cause confusion and jealousy.
