I add my recommendation of Tchaikovsky's "Winter Dreams" to those already given. Not having read enough comments, I do not know whether "Winter" from Haydn's "The Seasons" has been suggested, but it certainly should have been offered as a choice! The brooding introduction establishes the appropriate hibernal state of mind, which the beautiful arias initially sustain - before sounding more anticipatory of spring. I most recently played my English recording - Colin Davis with the BBC S.O. and Chorus, Philips. Splendid!

The second half of the 20th Century has very few composer's names to offer proudly to the Future. Piazzolla is one of those few.

I have been in Buenos Aires in their winter. As the Argentinians were bundled up in fur coats and goves, I was wearing a t-shirt and light khaki pants. It is all a matter of what climate you have been accustomed to experience.

Italy is not so wonderful in the winter. I lived in central Italy for four years. The masonry, ceramic tile and marble floors, etc. Very cold and damp. But winter is brief in the south and central parts. Ah but the spring. Beautiful -- goldfinches singing their little hearts out, the almond trees in bloom and the scent of lemons in the air.

Much as I love Piazzolla, I can hear his other tango works lurking here. Vivaldi I've hear enough of to last me several lifetimes. Verdi is logvely but I vote gor Glazunov, the real winter feeling is righjt there.

Piazolla captured what I felt as I walked through Prospect Park early this morning–the sun breaking through the snow covered branches casting long shadows over the iridescent fields, a surprising short breeze blowing a dusting of sparkling snow across the path, and the occasional skier gliding past in the distance. Moments of seclusion, moments of surprise, and moments of joy.

I vote for Glasanov. Who could be more in touch with winter than someone from Russia.

Glazunov captures the captures the icy facets of bleakness, cold, and at times exhilaration of Winter best.

Of the four pieces I am partial to the Glazunov.
The most "wintery" piece of music that I like and know is the second movement of the George Antheil Serenade for Strings No.1. It has a wintery wistfulness, shimmering shivering string tremuloes and pizzicato slipping of feet on ice. It's georgeous. An amazingly lyrical piece from the "Bad Boy of Music" who scared the music world with Ballet Mechanique.

My favorite winter piece however is the Frederick Delius piece, "Sleigh Ride". It is really a musical picture of a crisp snowy day complete with the pealing of the horses' bells as they shake the snow from their manes.

My vote is for Glazunov. Really brings the chill and tempest of winter. WQXR opens so many portals of music that it is just wonderful

In light of another recent shooting tragedy, could another mindset be used other than "showdown at high noon"? The American psyche is so seeped in "wild-west" mythology that we think nothing of h having a showdown at noon, an obvious reference to "Showdown at the OK Corral. I do not have an alternative, but I am sure my fellow listeners with their artistic sensibilities can offer something less violent. Please keep up the good work. QXR is the only station my cats (3) and I listen to. I leave it on for them even when I am not at home because it reminds them of our times together. Thank you

Although I love Vivaldi, my vote goes to Glazunov. It makes me feel the chill of winter in my bones. Piazzolla is good, but his winter makes me want to dance rather than wrap myself up in a warm comforter. And Verdi, what can I say? I love him, but his winter does not make me shiver.

I think in this case it is the Russian who best conveys the soul of winter. I listened to each sample, and I believe this piece is sublime. I have heard Vivaldi enough times on classical radio, lets give some one else their due.

The Glazunov captures an intense winter storm, as well as the beautiful glistening snow on the trees after the storm, through his musical imagery. Therefore, my vote today is for Glazunov's musical depiction of winter. (The Vivaldi has always been a favorite of mine though; the violin solo is so incredibly beautiful.)

I'd like to hear the Piazzolla piece. For me, even the letters of his name connotes what is comforting in snowy weather - a great slice of pizza, a glass of warm red wine and of course, WQXR.

Alexander Glazunov sounds pretty chilly to me.

My vote goes to Maestro Piazzolla, because he was one of the best contemporary Argentinian composers, and the one who made a revolution on tango. His "Estaciones porteñas" ("Buenos Aires´ Seasons") are among the best pieces he wrote.

Please play Glazunov! Here in Edmonton it is a bone-chilling -27 degree Celsius (which is almost -17 degree Fahrenheit) this morning! Glazunov being Russian is my pick to perfectly capture the feeling of Winter, he would know it best!

I would rather hear Tine Thing Helseth (trumpet) play In the Bleak Midwinter, but since that's not one of the choices, I'll go with anything except Vivaldi. My vote is for Piazzolla.

Please! Not Vivaldi! What is this fascination with Vivaldi? I'm up to here with hearing bits of the Four Seasons used almost as a default advertising jingle. Even the US passport office - last time I had to call them, anyway - used the first page or two of "Spring" over and over when I was on "hold." You'd think at least they, of all people, would have used music by Copland or Bernstein!

The Vivaldi is by far the most famous but also the most over-played so let's hear something else. The Piazzolla is new to me and quite lovely but I vote for the Verdi. Can't let a day go by without listening to a Verdi tune or two.
