Giuseppe Verdi’s lesser-known opera I Masnadieri, about doomed romance and a wealthy crook who seems to get away with murder, is a hot-blooded, somewhat messy affair. Yet the opera features an array brilliant musical numbers, including arias tailored for its first leading lady, the legendary soprano Jenny Lind.
This production of I Masnadieri comes from the Montpellier Festival in France. The stars are soprano Olga Mykytenko and tenor Alfred Kim as a pair of lovers whose dysfunctional family life makes their romance more than a little bit hazardous. Antonino Fogliani conducts.
