Though known today mainly as an instrumental composer, Joseph Haydn wrote a surprising number of operas, including La Vera Costanza. In this accomplished drama, a determined young woman’s devotion to a secret marriage nearly leads to her tragic death.
In this production by the Royal Wallonie Opera, from the Palais Opéra, in Liège, Belgium, the stars are mezzo-soprano Federica Carnevale and tenor Anicio Zorzi Giustiniani as the troubled couple Rosina and Errico, in a performance led by conductor Jesús López-Cobos.
